Hi Mariel, tell us a little bit about yourself!

Hello! My name is Mariel and I'm currently a Production Supervisor at DreamWorks Animation.  [Pre-Pandemic] During my free time, I like to do outdoor-ish activities such as bouldering (indoors only), cycling to a destination, workout with a buddy.  I also love to stay at home and zen myself by drawing or painting.  I also like to explore new coffee spots.

Can you tell us what you do as a Production Supervisor at DreamWorks Animation for those who are unfamiliar?

As a Production Supervisor, we partner up with the Creative Supervisor and facilitate the team to assure we have fun creating a project for the world to see!

How did you decide to pursue production?

Initially, I was in International Business Industry for a few years, traveling around in Asia.  When I came back to the US, I realized how unhappy I was with my job and decided to take a leap of faith and pursue a path that I have always wanted to do.

What programs & tools do you use everyday for work? What do you like/dislike about these programs?

Google Suite, Shotgrid (aka Shotgun), proprietary softwares.  They're made to help us so I just make sure they become my best friends and use them to my benefit.

Any advice on how to stand out and get hired for those starting off?

Do your homework and be proactive.  Anything is possible so don't put yourself in a box and trust that you can be the best.  It's all about having positive mindset to get the ball rolling.

What are some must-have resources (books, tools, podcasts, etc.) you would recommend for your industry?

I'd recommend my podcast that friends and I just started this year.  LIPP - Ladies in Production Podcast.  Our season 1 is out and it covers a variety of topics that everyone can enjoy.  Available on Apple, Google, and Spotify.

What are 3 character traits that would make someone excel in your field?

1) Quick on their feet
2) Can handle and organize hectic situation in a calm manner
3) Is not afraid of the unknown

Most satisfying & difficult thing about your job?

The most satisfying thing about my job is when I see the smiles on kids' and adults' faces, bringing  joy to their life. 😁

The most difficult thing about my job is the stress and the long hours.

What would you like to say to your younger self?

Do what makes you happy, not what makes other people happy.

Best advice you've received/heard?

- Choose purpose, then provision will come.
- Success is how to say no.
- Your worth is not measured by your success.
